Start with the shooting style
The compact-camera look is not only a preset. It comes from direct flash, close distance, simple framing, small-sensor contrast, and imperfect low-light color. Shoot more like a point-and-shoot before editing.
Phone camera settings
- Use the rear camera: it usually has better detail and flash behavior than the selfie camera.
- Turn flash on indoors: direct flash gives the crisp social-photo edge.
- Lower exposure slightly: tap and drag exposure down a little to protect faces and highlights.
- Step closer: compact-camera photos often feel close, direct, and slightly informal.
- Avoid ultra-wide: use the main lens for a more natural compact-camera feel.
Editing recipe
Warm the skin slightlyKeep skin alive, but do not make the whole image orange.
Lift shadows a littleOld compact photos often have visible flash fall-off, not crushed black everywhere.
Soften clarityA small reduction in harsh digital sharpness helps the phone file feel less clinical.
Add mild color separationPinkish highlights, cooler shadows, and gentle saturation can suggest a compact-camera edit.
What not to fake
Do not overblur the image or add heavy film grain. The G7X / compact digicam feel is cleaner and flashier than film. Keep the edit readable, bright, and social-photo friendly.
